MURRIETA – A fire destroyed an unoccupied, historic house today in Murrieta.
The fire was reported shortly after 2 a.m. in the 24000 block of Washington Avenue, and was initially believed to be burning in a church, said Matt Corelli of the Murrieta Fire Department.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered that the fire was actually burning in a house south of the church, he said.
As a precaution, firefighters set up fire streams to protect the church.
It took 19 firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire that resulted in the “total loss” of the building, according to Corelli.
The house had been declared a historic site by the City of Murrieta, but was in disrepair at the time of the fire, Corelli said. However, the city had been in the process of coming up with a plan to preserve the structure, he said.
