A vehicle backed into and sheered off a fire hydrant at it’s base near Murrieta’s Dunkin’ Donuts at Alta Murrieta and Murrieta Hot Springs Sunday afternoon. A tower of water shot nearly 20 feet in the air.
The Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot filled with responding firefighters from Murrieta Fire Department Station 3 who are working to shut off the flow of water as of 3 p.m. Jan. 3.
Curious bystanders and onlookers gathered in the outdoor seating area of the donut shop and in the parking lot to watch firefighters battle the water spout caused by the accident.
It is unknown at this time as to how many gallons of water are flowing from the hydrant.

“It’s common for Murrieta Fire to be first on scene and to isolate the valve,” Murrieta Fire Department Public Information Officer Matt Corelli said. “The Eastern Municipal Water District is en route. They will assist in rerouting water after we shut off the valve and to keep the water flowing in the area.”
Crews will isolate the valves near hydrant, according to Corelli, and will use a piece of equipment to shut it off temporarily.
“We will work to protect the natural resource, water being valuable commodity,” Corelli said, “and mitigate the damage in advance of water company’s arrival.”
It is unknown at this time what size line, pressure, or volume was flowing through that water line.
